Looks like a good close finish for the Grand Aggregate. With a bit of wind a lot may happen on Friday morning! Jim T

Thursday, 24 Aug 2017

It was another good weather day; clear skies and lots of wind.  This morning, we concluded the Gibson match and, for this year only, the qualification for the Governor General’s Final.

The Gibson match was won by Jon Underwood, GBRT, with a score of 149v17, one v-bull ahead of Kent Reeve, USA.

A number of aggregates were decided today and I shall attempt to summarize some of the bigger ones now.  The cut-off for the Governor General’s Final was 244v21 with Nick Healy, UK being the last one in.  The All-Comers Aggregate was won by Nigel Ball, GBRT, with a 500v71.  Kent Reeve was close behind with 500v61.

As far as the Grand Aggregate goes, with only the Gatineau left to be fired, Ian Shaw, GBRT, remains in the lead with 599v76, 7 v-bulls ahead of Kent Reeve.  It should be an exciting final match tomorrow to decide the winner.

In the afternoon, there were a number of team matches fired, including the Outlander, Provincial and Michael Faraday.  The wind picked up significantly, producing some very tricky conditions.  In the Outlander (15 shots for score at 600y and 900m), the Great Britain Rifle Team won the match with an 1154v116.  The GBRT alongside team placed second with 1152v116, with a Canadian team composed of shooters who will be forming a goodwill team to Guyana finishing third with 1074v59.

The British Cadet Rifle Team (Athelings) won the Michael Faraday match over Canada with a score of 1202v75.  The Canadian cadets shot 1158v61.

In the Provincial match (15 shots for score at 600y), Ontario Blue team fired a 296v34 for a narrow victory over the Atlantic Scalliwags, who shot 296v31.  As for the London Merchants (15 shots at 900m), Ontario Blue claimed victory again with a score of 282v21.  The Atlantic Scalliwags placed second with a 272v15.

So, it was a busy day at Connaught Ranges.  Tomorrow, the Grand Aggregate wraps up with the firing of the Gatineau (15 shots at 900m).  If conditions are anything like we had this afternoon, it should make for a very interesting finish.  The afternoon consists of the first International Team Match, the Canada Match (10 shots at 300y, 500y, 600y) for 8 shooters.
