Sun 17 Aug 2008
This was an excellent day for shooting. No rain, although scattered showers had been forecast, mostly sunny, and a brisk breeze varying in both strength and direction. In fact, this was Connaught at its best!
Two matches were fired today: the Tilton in the morning (300m and 600y), the last of the "warm-ups"; and the Macdougall (300m and 500y), the first of the Grand Aggregate events.
With that extra edge, scores were higher today, in spite of the non-trivial wind. In the Tilton, there were nine scores of 100 in the TR class, with another 20 at 99. Pat Vamplew, Whitby ON, came out top of the list with 100.16, just ahead of Roger Mullin, Cobourg ON, 100.15, and Barry Langille, New Glasgow NS, 100.14. In the F Class, Marius de Champlain, Rimouski QC, won with 118 (ex 120), from Bruce Condie, Kincardine ON, 117, and Leslie Dolhun, Winnipeg MB, 116.
The Titlon also finished off the Champlain Aggregate of warm-up events. Peter Church, Dearborn MI USA, won this with 294.31, from Pat Vamplew, 293.32, and Geoff Woodman, New Harbour NL, 293.26.
The Macdougall got the Macdonald Stewart Grand Aggregate underway. Conditions were somewhat windier in the afternoon, so that there were again nine 100s but only 10 99s. Pat Vamplew won the match with 100.15, from Scott Murray, Arnprior ON, 100.14, and Roger Romses, Aurora ON, 100.13. Marius de Champlain won the F Class with 118, from Dave Rumbold, Ottawa ON, 117, and Matthew Wolf, Mascarene MB, 116. In the "coffee" stakes, the score is Brown 1 - Thompson 1, both having done some silly things during the afternoon.
Gastronomic report - very fine veal steaks, with more Portuguese red.
In the evening, there were the Semi-Annual meetings of members (the "Kickers" Meeting) and the Council. There being little kicking, the meetings did not last long.
Four more ranges tomorrow in the Grand, included in the Norman Beckett and John Brick Matches.
Finally, I might say that the last shots in the Macdougall were fired at about 17:20. The preliminary result was on the web site and posted at the range with a time stamp of 17:43:47. Well done Peter!
