World Fullbore Championships - Day 1 Sun 26 Aug 2007

This was the first day of the World Fullbore Championships and, apart from some individual practice, contained the team matches for Veterans, Under 25s and Under 21s. It was an excellent day for shooting, mostly sunny, no rain and with a variable, often fish-tailing wind from the front.

Each of the matches was keenly contested, with the result of the Veterans being in doubt right up to the last shot. Thanks to a lot of hard work, and modern technology, information was radioed from the range to a computer from which ‘live scores’ were instantly shown on a web site. I saw much of the matches in person, but for the last half hour I was buried in the DCRA basement attacking other problems, so I ‘watched’ the scores on the web. And very exciting they were too!

The lead in both the Veterans and Under 25 matches changed hands several times as teams encountered problems with a fickle breeze at 900 metres.

Here is a summary – all matches were 10 shots at 300 & 600 yards, 800 & 900 metres:

Under 21 Teams (6 shooters): World Champions – United States 1157.83; 2nd Canada 1139.81; 3rd Great Britain 1127.71.

Under 25 Teams (8 shooters): World Champions – Great Britain 1558.150; 2nd United States 1555.148; 3rd Australia 1549.123; 4th Canada 1537.114.

Veterans Teams (10shooters): World Champions – Great Britain 1931.158; 2nd South Africa 1928.164; 3rd United States 1928.163; 4th Canada 1917.179; 5th Australia 1912.134; shooting alongside Channel Islands 1856.117.

Individual World Champions in each age group were also declared, but a review has been called for in the Under 25 and Under 21 categories.

The Veterans list includes: World Champion – Tom Whitaker, USA; 2nd Eddie Newman, USA; 3rd Felix Solis, USA. The Prizes were presented by Lt. General Charles Belzille and Brig. General D. Daly.

Tomorrow, after more opportunity for practice, we will have the Ceremonial Opening Shot of the 2007 Championship, the first range at 700 metres, and the Official Opening Ceremony and Reception. It will be a busy afternoon!

The weather seems set fair for a couple of days, with some showers possible on Wednesday.
