Thu 19 Aug 2004
As I mentioned yesterday, the forecast for the morning was not good - and so it turned out, at least to begin with. There was light rain before the first relay started at 8:00 AM, and it had stopped briefly while the relay got underway. Then the skies opened and there was a good downpour, resulting in a cessation of shooting around 8:15. Not only were shooters having great trouble in seeing the targets, but the targets themselves were beginning to disintegrate. A lengthy delay of over an hour and a half, during which time the targets were repaired, and there was much anxious viewing of Environment Canada's web site, shoot re-commenced. Not long after the sun came out and it was a gorgeous day for shooting - not too warm, a clear light and a changeable breeze. The latter was quite strong for much of the morning, but died off in the afternoon. The full programme was completed, the only loss being that of 5 shots per team member in the Outlander and London Merchants Team Matches at 900 metres. It was therefore a long day, with the markers, butts and range staff deserving much credit for keeping it going. The match completed this morning was the Gibson, adding the 300 metre and 600 yard ranges to the 800 metre fired yesterday. Jane Messer, GBRT, was the winner of the match, from Toby Raincock, GBRT, 149.15, and David Luckman, GBRT, 148.21. Wolfgang Scholze, BDMP, Germany, won the F Class with 175, from John Ingoldsby, Caledon East, Ontario, 171, and William Hammers, West Bloomfield, MI, 170. The completion of the Gibson meant that several aggregates and concurrent events were also finished. All details can be found on the links below. The major aggregate was the All Comers, consisting of Grand Aggregate Ranges back to 600 yards. David Luckman was the winner, 605.87, from James Paton, White Rock, BC, 603.77, and Des Vamplew, Toronto, Ontario, 602.75. Wolfgang Scholze again topped the F Class with 707, from Dave Rumbold, Ottawa, Ontario, 699, and William Hammers, 697. The Short Range Aggregate, of all the Grand Aggregate matches at 300 metres, was also won by David Luckman with 235.34, from James Paton, 235.33, and Des Vamplew, 235.32. There were 6 scores of 235 in all. F Class winner was Wolfgang Scholze with 279 (out of 282), from John Ingoldsby and Dave Rumbold, both with 276. David Luckman also won the Maple Leaf Aggregate, of Grand Aggregate scores at 500 and 600 yards, with 370.53, followed by David Calvert, GBRT, 368.49, and James Paton, 368.44. In the F Class, the winner was agaqin Wolfgang Scholze, 428, from Dave Rumbold, 423, and William Hammers. 422. The McCulloch Trophy, for Old Timers in the All Comers, was won by Bob Pitcairn, Chilliwack, BC. Two non-aggregate matches were fired this afternoon. The Street, 15 at 700-800-900 metres, was won by William Tabor, Centennial, CO, with 221.24, with William Hammers winning the F Class with 248. And the Rideau, 20 shots at 900 metres, won by John Corning, Jericho, VT, 97.8, and Leo D'Amour, Laval, Quebec, 119. Several team matches were fired this afternoon, but due to the delay occasioned by the morning's rain, I do not yet have the details of scores and results. I will try to report tomorrow. The Grand Aggregate has 755 points on score, with just 75 to go in the Gatineau tomorrow. The leaders are: David Luckman, 752.105; James Paton, 750.95; and Jon Underwood, GBRT, 749.95. F Class: Wolfgang Scholze, 877; William Hammers, 865; Dave Rumbold, 864. Thursday night at the CFRC is traditionally the time for provincial and other team dinners. I went to the Ontario function, where there was considerable pleasure about the double victory in the Provincial (600 yards) and london Merchants (900 metres) matches fired in the afternoon. Tomorrow will see the Gatineau, the final range of the Grand, and Patron's Matches, as well as the Commonwealth and Under-25 International Long Range Matches. The Grand Aggregate winner will be honoured at the Macdonald Stewart Dinner in the evening.
