Durant une carrière qui s’échelonna sur environ 50 ans, Norm Beckett s’est mérité tous les honneurs.

Lieutenant Colonel Botsford

Lieutenant Colonel Botsford was the founding President of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association in 1868. Within six months of the formation of the Association he arranged for the first Annual Prize Meeting which was held at La Prairie, Quebec. More that two thousand competitors from all areas of Canada attended this first APM. Prize money amounted to more than $5,000.00.

During his term as President Lieutenant Colonel Botsford initiated the development and approval of a Constitution and By-Laws of the Association.

One of our matches at the Canadian Fullbore Rifle Championships is named in his honour.

Colonel Sir Casimir Gzowski, ADC

Colonel Sir Casimir Gzowski was President of the DCRA from 1869 to 1883. He was also ADC to Queen Victoria. During this period he was almost always present during our Bisley Team’s stay in England. On most occasions he preceded the team to England and made many of the arrangement prior to their arrival. Colonel Sir Casimir initiated the tradition of the Canadian Reception, a tradition that has continued to this day. Early editions of the Canadian Marksman provide details of the splendor of the occasions with upwards of 400 guests in attendance. All associated costs were paid by Sir Casimir.

One of our most prestigious matches at the CFRC is named in his honour.

Colonel, The Honourable J.M. Gibson, ADC

Colonel Gibson was President of the DCRA from 1893 to 1906. During his term as President the DCRA moved from the Rideau Ranges in downtown Ottawa to the Rockcliffe Range. During his term as President he guided the Association through the initial conceptual planning, the securing of the site, the production of architectural drawings, the collection of materials and the eventual construction of the Canadian Pavilion at Bisley, England.

One of our matches at the Annual CFRC is named in honour of Colonel Gibson.

Lieutenant Colonel Tilton

Lieutenant Colonel Tilton was appointed Chairman of the Bisley Building Committee in 1995. He was ultimately responsible for the conduct of a feasibility study, the detailed development of structural and accommodation requirements, the soliciting of architectural drawings, the selection of the design, the soliciting and movement of construction materials and furnishings to Bisley and the actual construction process. From the start of the planning process to completion of construction was an astonishing 18 months.

One of our matches at the Annual CFRC is named in honour of Lieutenant Colonel Tilton.

Major Henry Fullerton Perley

Major Perley was appointed Secretary of the Bisley Building Committee in 1895. He was responsible for all correspondence associated with the project. In March of 1897 Major Perley went to Bisley Camp as the construction foreman with the formidable task of having the building sufficiently completed to house the team on their arrival in July. Major Perley very nearly completed his task but he had worked with such dedicated energy that exhaustion eventually caused his death on July 15th, 1897.

Major Perley was given a full Military Funeral and buried at the small Anglican Church at Bisley. A memorial stone at the church marks his burial place.

Colonel (Lieutenant General) Sir Sam Hughes, MP

Colonel Sam Hughes was President of the DCRA from 1907 to 1911. He later became Minister of Militia and Defence and developed a policy of a large volunteer Militia and a small Regular Force, achieving a total Militia of 50,000 by 1913. Colonel Hughes was an avid believer in Marksmanship training and initiated a plan for the development of the Connaught Ranges, a 2,650 acre site, which would be named after Queen Victoria’s son Arthur, the Duke of Connaught, who was Canada’s Governor General of Canada at the time.

General Hughes relied heavily on the expertise of the Executive of the DCRA in developing the design and layout of the ranges. The outbreak of World War 1 delayed the opening of the ranges until 1921.

The ranges opened in time for the Annual Prize Meeting in 1921. The Patron of the Association, General Sir Julian Byng of Vimy, was the Governor General at the time. In his remarks he described General Hughes as “The Patron Saint of Musketry”. General Hughes never saw his beloved Connaught Ranges in operation and died in Lindsay, Ontario, shortly after the official opening.

Mr. Walter M. Stewart

Mr. Walter M. Stewart was, for many years, a foremost member of the DCRA. As President of the Macdonald Stewart Tobacco Company and a devote marksman, he was a major benefactor of the Association. He sponsored the Macdonald Stewart Grand Aggregate, the major Aggregate within the DCRA Annual Prize Meeting, and he initiated the tradition of the Macdonald Stewart Dinner at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa to honour the winner of the Grand Aggregate.

Walter Stewart loved the Canadian Pavilion at Bisley and dedicated much time, effort and financial support to the DCRA home in England. Walter Stewart passed away on July 20th, 1967. In 1975 the Pavilion was rededicated in his memory as "The Macdonald Stewart Pavilion".

Major/Colonel R.J. Birtwhistle

Major Birtwhistle assumed the role of Secretary of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association in 1909 and continued to serve in this capacity until 1952; a total of 43 years. During his tour he saw the Association basically shut down during the period 1914 to 1918 and then orchestrated the move of the DCRA from the Rockcliffe Ranges to the Connaught Ranges. For 39 of those 45 years (1914-1918) Colonel Birtwhistle organized and supervised every aspect of the DCRA’s Annual Prize Meeting

Throughout all these years Colonel Birtwhistle painstakingly recorded the details of the history of the DCRA, ranging all the way from ammunition, rifles, targets, wind, optics to administration.

Colonel Birtwhistle was, for 45 years, the historian of the DCRA. He has left a vital legacy and a lasting record of the achievements by its members, without which, the research of information for Hall of Fame members would be impossible.

Major General H.F.C. Letson

Major General Harry Letson was President of the DCRA from 1954 to 1956. For many years he was a staunch supporter of the Association, contributing much time, energy and finances to the DCRA .

Two very prestigious matches bear his name. In the Canadian Forces Small Arms Competition (CFSAC), the overall winning team is presented the Letson Trophy which qualifies that team to represent the Canadian Forces at Bisley the following year. In the Canadian Fullbore Rifle Championships, the winner of the Letson Match is granted a Life Membership in the Association.

When Major General Letson passed away in 1996, a considerable sum of money was provided to the DCRA to assist young shooters, who had qualified for the Bisley Team, in financing their trip to England.

Mr. A.G. Switzer

Gordon joined the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association in the 1940’s and worked under the Secretary/Treasurer, the late Colonel Dick Birtwhistle, who had held the position since 1909. Gordon assumed the position of Secretary/Treasurer in 1952 and continued in the position until his retirement in 1980, a period of service of over thirty years to the DCRA.

During his term as Secretary/Treasurer the DCRA headquarters location was moved three times. Gordon was the planner, and to a large extent, the mover of all the files, memorabilia and trappings of the Association.

The title of Secretary/Treasurer is not very descriptive. Certainly there is the tracking of all the finances that amounted to something in the order of $200,000 per annum. However, the details of the Annual Prize Meeting with all of its ancillary requirements are a major annual task when one considers, ammunition, targets, markers, range staff, safety, accommodation for competitors, prizes and the annual moving of the operation from the downtown office to the Connaught Ranges. All of the activities were handled by Gord for almost 30 years without so much as complaint.

The esteem with which Gord was held by the membership was manifested by his appointment as a Life Governor of the DCRA in 1986.

Major Alan B. Coulter

Major Coulter was President of the DCRA from 1957 to 1962. During his term as President the Department of National Defence reduced the Government Grant to the Association by a substantial amount thereby causing great difficulties in financing the transportation of our Bisley teams to England. Major Coulter met with the Minister of National Defence and, because he was held in such high esteem, obtained authority for the DCRA Bisley Teams to travel to England on Military Service Aircraft. This agreement continued until 1992 when the Canadian Military ceased regular flights to Europe.

Lieutenant General W.A. Milroy, DSO, CD

Lieutenant General Milroy served as President of the DCRA from 1974 to 1981. During this period he guided the Association through some very difficult and divisive issues. Thanks to his outstanding leadership and diplomacy the DCRA came through this contentious period a united and much stronger Association. Our relations with the Department of National Defence were never stronger than during his term as President. Since that time he has always made himself available to assist at the Canadian Forces Small Arms Competition and the Canadian Fullbore Rifle Championships. Most recently, he led the Association’s Building Committee in the construction of our magnificent headquarters building and spearheaded the fundraising campaign, which succeeded in raising in excess of $220,000 over a two year period.

General Milroy is one of our senior Life Governors.

Colonel David M. Stewart

Colonel David M. Stewart succeeded his father, Mr. Walter M. Stewart as President of the Macdonald Stewart Foundation and continued to provide outstanding support to the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association and particularly to the Macdonald Stewart Pavilion at Bisley, England. He continued the tradition of hosting the Macdonald Stewart Dinner at the Chateau Laurier in honour of the winner of the Macdonald Stewart Grand Aggregate. Colonel Stewart was appointed Commandant of the 1983 Canadian Bisley Team.

Colonel John Brick

Colonel John Brick joined the DCRA in the late 1940’s and served the Association in almost every capacity until his passing in December of 1999. An internationally renowned Marksman, he represented Canada in both national and international rifle competitions in England, Australia, New Zealand, United States, the West Indies and South Africa. He was member of the Bisley Team 7 times between 1963 and 1989, including Commandant in 1972, and Vice Captain in 1989. He was a member of the Palma Team on five occasions including Captain in 1979 and Adjutant in 1982. In 1976 John was selected as the Assistant Technical Director for shooting sports for the Olympic Games. He was inducted into the Canadian Forces Sports Hall of Fame in 1977.

In addition to his shooting ability, John was widely recognized for his leadership and organizational abilities. He was elected as President of the Ontario Provincial Rifle Association and the Quebec Provincial Rifle Association; he served as Executive Vice President of the DCRA from 1971 to 1972; he was made an Honorary Life member of the National Rifle Associations of Great Britain, United States of America and South Africa. John was a Senior Life Governor of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association.

John worked tirelessly to promote good relationships between other shooting organizations in Canada and for the enhancement of the image of the DCRA. In 1991, when the decision was made to construct the DCRA headquarters building at the Connaught Ranges, John threw his full support behind the project and became a prime mover in the fundraising efforts. Again, he led by example and made a substantial contribution to the project. One of his last acts for the DCRA was the donation of a legacy to be used for the assistance and encouragement of young shooters.

Mrs. Lilianne Stewart

Mrs. Stewart was selected as the Commandant of the 1990 and 1997 Canadian Rifle teams to Bisley. In 1991 Mrs. Stewart was named Honorary Commandant of all DCRA Bisley Teams. Her support to the DCRA Palma Teams has been unsurpassed. She continues to provide outstanding leadership and financial support to the Macdonald Stewart Pavilion, the DCRA and its Provincial Associations in pursuit of our shooting mandate. Mrs. Stewart continues the tradition of hosting the Macdonald Stewart Dinner at the Chateau Laurier during the Canadian Fullbore Rifle Championships. During the 1997 Centennial of the Macdonald Stewart Pavilion she again became Commandant and provided funding for an unforgettable celebration at the Pavilion. It goes without saying that she is primarily responsible for the leadership and funding which has resulted in the preservation of a unique piece of Canadian History at Bisley - The Macdonald Stewart Pavilion.

Dr. Jim Thompson

Since becoming a member of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association in the early 1970’s Dr. Jim Thompson has shot his way onto many Bisley Teams, has been selected as Commandant of our Bisley Team, Captain of two Palma Teams, Captain of two Canada Match Teams, Captain of one Commonwealth Match Team, Adjutant of the Bisley Team, and on numerous occasions coach of International and National Teams.

He has served on virtually every committee of the DCRA Executive. In January 1984 he accepted the office of Executive Vice President of the Association and for the next 12 years guided the DCRA through an extremely difficult period. Prior to that he and his wife, Marion, undertook to write, edit and publish the Canadian Marksman from their home, a task they continued to perform until 1993. This provided the much needed information instrument to keep the membership informed. In addition to his other DCRA duties he assumed the responsibility of Programme Director while still Vice-President. As a consequence, the DCRA Annual Prize Meeting (Canadian Fullbore Championships) has the most challenging and rewarding shooting programme in the fullbore world.

While carrying out these responsibilities for the DCRA, he was also Chairman of Council for the Ontario Rifle Association and continues as Membership Secretary.

Jim, has given so much of his time and effort to the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association over the past thirty-five years that there is no doubt that he has played a major role in our survival during some of those dark years.

Major Colin Brown

Major Colin Brown is one of our longest serving members, having joined the DCRA in 1947. Moreover, he shot at Connaught as a Cadet in 1939- an incredible record of service to the DCRA and the shooting world. He shot his way onto the 1962 and 1965 Bisley Teams; was Adjutant to Lt.Col Bill Strachan’s 1966 Bisley team and was Commandant of the 1973 Team, one of the few to win the coveted Kolopore Cups. He was elected as Executive Vice President and served from 1973 to 1974. He was elected for a second term in 1981 and served until 1984. He is the second most senior Life Governor and has actively participated in the work of the Executive Committee before and after his terms as Executive Vice President. He was selected by the membership to be Deputy Chairman of Council in 1985 and has continued in this position until 2005.

Throughout his many years with the Association he has been a staunch supporter of Cadet Shooting Programmes. As a result the DCRA was at the forefront of the Cadet Shooting world until the late 1990’s. He has served on many committees during these many years and perhaps one of the most visible contributions has been his chairmanship of the Honours and Awards Committee. This small group has been responsible for providing recognition to the many deserving members of the DCRA.

Major Colin Brown has given much of his time and effort to the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association over the past fifty-eight years
